Maiden Voyage

Today, I christened my newest pair of crazy pants with a CrossFit workout first thing in the morning. In true Steve in a Speedo fashion, I feel I must name these pants. I think I shall call them my laser galaxy capris because they remind me of those laser backgrounds they used for school photos back in the '90s.

Because of my schedule, it's the easiest (note, not easy, just easiest) to get up before the sun and go to the 6 a.m. workout. I go on Tuesdays and Thursdays to participate in the CrossFit Endurance WODs, which focus on using your body weight to build speed and increase your capacity for discomfort. There is weight lifting, but the prescribed workouts are usually at a lower threshold.

Today, we did Cindy, one of CrossFit Benchmark WODS. It doesn't require any weights, but you do need a pull up bar. It's five pull ups, 10 push ups and 15 squats repeated as many times as you can muster in 20 minutes. It sounds simple enough, but I can't do a real pull up, and have a limited capacity for push ups, too. I used a giant rubber band to assist me over the bar, then eventually had to do my push ups from my knees (girly push up). I finished 12 rounds and my arms felt shaky. I really pushed myself through to get the most I could in the time allotted.

As a result, I had a very strange experience at work. It started with a glimmer in my peripheral vision. I was on my way to lunch, and by the time I made it to the place next door, my vision was getting dark and the words on the menu seem jumbled. I felt much better after I ate, but it's a damn good thing I already knew what I wanted to eat.

Here's hoping this was just a fluke! Just in case, I'm taking it easy tonight and skipping my workout tomorrow.

I have had that happen to me before, on long endurance runs. It's freaky!

That sounds like an intense workout!

I'm actually super relieved to hear that. I was worried there was something seriously wrong. Like, I was contemplating having a coworker take me home. Luckily, eating lunch made it go away. It's funny, because when it started, I wasn't that hungry (like an apple would have topped me off nicely).

Yea - you pushed yourself pretty hard, then. I'm no athlete, but if I really push it on the WODs I get ill, like, for the rest of the day/evening and light headed too. Crossfit ain't no joke, yo! Glad you were better quickly!

That's happened to me before when I was dehydrated! Are you dehydrated?

I'm hoping your little issue was just a drop in blood sugar or something? It happened to me once on a run on the treadmill (we won't discuss how crazy it was that no one even approached me as I almost collapsed and sat with my head btwn my knees for 10 minutes).

I can't do a pullup to save my life. I tried a year or so ago, and it was humiliating. lol

I LOVE the pants an the name for them. They definitely remind me of those crazy photo backgrounds! "Lazer" was so always the popular choice.

I'm pretty sure that laser background was an upsell, too. Smart marketers ...

Sounds like low blood sugar to me! Sometimes when I work out really hard I'm not hungry for awhile afterward. But if I don't eat something I get a kind of weird tunnel vision.
