Running in the Real World

Inspired by this song, which has been stuck in my head:

Boy oh boy, running in real life v. running on Pinterest is really rough. I had these grand plans of a mind-clearing, blissed-out pavement session ending in a runner's high. Not so much ...

Today was a crap day. Icy, snowy, raining and just miserable. It was basically the definition of cuddle weather. Sweats and puppy on the couch with hot cocoa. But I got my ass out of bed, had my coffee and banana with peanut butter for 14 miles. I haven't really picked a training plan, but I figured I should start upping my miles for the year. I've been tackling most of my mid-week miles on my home treadmill with one outdoor run per week. I just can't do double-digit miles by myself on a treadmill. I want to get tougher anyhow, so to the streets I go. Also, I'm participating in the Moms Run This Town mileage challenge this year (with the Chicago south suburban chapter), so I need to keep up a brave face. No, I'm not a mom, but I like the camaraderie and they're really welcoming. I want to keep my mileage up to help the team, despite the crap weather and early mornings.

If there's one thing I've learned from running is that it's the perfect analogy for life. You get out what you put in. And since I want to get out a new personal best, it's time to put in the miles and the sweat and the tears.

Bring on the miles.

I've always been reluctant to join any mom groups because well I am not a mom.

It is hard to get out and run with this weather. Well, I make my way to the gym and even that is a struggle. Hopefully this year I can buy a treadmill.
