Kelly the Culinarian: About Me

About Me

Hi, I'm Kelly. I love to eat and started this blog way back in 2007 when I was a graduate student at the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. Since then, I've had a few jobs, and I'm now the social media manager at an association in the suburbs.

Outside of my 9-5, I'm a beer geek dwelling in the suburbs of Chicago with Napoleon, my 9-pound Yorkshire Terrier who has roughly three tons of personality. He rules this house with an adorable iron paw.

In 2010, I realized that if I want to continue my love affair with food, I had to balance it out with some activity. You can learn more about my evolution from couch potato to athlete here. I viewed exercise as punishment and dieted for a few months using I started running to bust a weight-loss slump. It has changed my life in ways I hadn't even imagined. Now, running is my outlet, my hobby, my social life and my therapy.

I'm happy with my new, active lifestyle and all the fun it brings. I balance out all the delicious craft beers with training for my first Ironman Triathlon in 2014 for my 30th birthday. It's a huge goal: 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike and 26.2-mile run. Along the way, I've placed in my age group in three separate triathlons and had a wonderful time completing my first half Ironman in Racine. In 2014, I added Ironman to my resume, completing Ironman Wisconsin in 14:48.

But rest assured I really only do all of this to balance out the stouts, porters and goodies I so very much enjoy. My favorite ingredients are chocolate, oatmeal and peanut butter. You'll find plenty of healthy recipes here to balance out all the decadent desserts and restaurant fare I enjoy. I'm never one to pass on chocolate, and I believe a life of balance is the only one worth living. I run hard so I can eat hard.

Join me as I fuel my future-champion self, tracking my progress and favorite recipes. I share my insights, reviews, tips and tricks and hope you'll add your thoughts in the comment section. If you'd like to meet up at a race, have a question or want to get in touch, e-mail me any time at

Wow, Kelly! It was so interesting to read through your blog. My husband would loooooove all the chocolate. It's nice to read how other people train for their goals. Good luck with the triathlon training and can't wait for the Fort2Base race this fall :o)

I graduated from Medill, too! How awesome that you were married at Alice Millar Chapel. My husband (also an NU grad) and I are definitely a purple-wearing, Big Ten-watching, Wildcats-loving family, too. Looking forward to reading more of your blog!
